Send Food from Nepal to UK: Achar, Masala, Honey and What Is Not Allowed

Send food from Nepal to UK: packaged masala, achar and dry snacks allowed, ghee not allowed

By Pals Courier and Cargo team · Updated 19 October 2026

Quick answer: You can send food from Nepal to UK if it is dry, sealed and packaged: labelled masala and spices, vegetable achar in sealed jars, dalmoth and other dry snacks, chiura, dal, timur, jimbu, and honey up to 2 kg. You cannot send ghee, milk sweets, chhurpi or other dairy, meat, sukuti, fresh fruit or vegetables. Homemade food such as sel roti may be inspected and held by UK customs.

Nothing tastes like home. For Nepalis in the UK, a packet of masala from Asan, a jar of mother’s achar or a bag of chiura is often the best part of a parcel from Nepal.

But the UK has strict food rules, and the wrong item can stop a whole box at customs. This guide lists the Nepali foods you can send, the ones you cannot, and how to pack them so they arrive safely.

Why Can't I Send Ghee or Chhurpi?

This is the question we hear most. Ghee, butter, chhurpi and milk sweets are all milk products. The UK does not allow milk or milk-based products from countries outside Europe, to protect British farms from animal diseases. It does not matter if the ghee is homemade or from a shop, or if the jar is sealed. Please do not hide ghee among clothes. If it is found, it is destroyed and the whole parcel can be delayed.

Instead of ghee: send mustard oil, honey, a good masala set or homemade-style achar from a labelled brand.

How to Pack Food for the UK

  1. Keep the label: send food in its original packet with the name and ingredients visible.
  2. Double-seal liquids: achar jars, oil and honey go in small bottles, taped shut and placed in a zip bag.
  3. Separate food from clothes: pack all food in one plastic bag at the bottom of the box.
  4. Write a food list: list every food item. Honest declarations clear UK customs faster.
  5. Keep it personal: send family-size amounts, not large quantities that look like stock for sale.
